Jude Askey-Brown is a painter celebrating plants and gardens, living and working in Kent. Jude studied textiles at Leeds University where she developed her passion for colour, pattern and texture.
She has always collected textiles and vintage homeware, scraps of vintage fabric, everyday objects that become a central role in her compositions. Her work is about relationships and her current collection reflects memories of her grandfather’s cottage, where geraniums, hydrangeas and rows of terracotta pots evoke the textures, colours and sensory details of family life.
'My current collection of work draws on memories of the gardens and windowsills at my grandfather’s house. Crammed full of his overwintered geraniums and cuttings taken in the autumn to plant as soon as the spring warmth appeared. The geraniums and hydrangeas were often a tangled mess of woody stems, dried leaves and flowers with glimmers of bright green new growth. The row of terracotta pots some chipped and cracked on every windowsill in his cottage and the earthy smell when he watered them.'
