Joanna Milne

Joanna was born in Sussex, and now paints from her countryside studio in Essex.
Her work explores intuitive abstraction, often inspired by the sea and organic floral forms. Each painting begins without a fixed plan, guided instead by instinct, emotion, and movement.
Using a combination of palette knife, brushes, and expressive mark making, she builds layered surfaces that evolve naturally on the canvas. She is drawn to earthy base tones, allowing colours and textures to emerge gradually through instinctive layering.
Rather than aiming for representation, her process is about responding to how she feels in the moment, letting the painting unfold freely. The finished work reflects a balance between control and spontaneity, inviting the viewer to connect with atmosphere, memory, and emotion.
Joanna is drawn to the endless loop of interpretation her work invites, as viewers respond in ways that often move beyond the physical and into the emotional or intuitive. This open exchange, where meaning is felt rather than fixed, is where her work feels most alive - and most true to her.
