ARTIST
Joanna was born in Sussex and now paints from her countryside studio in Essex.
Her paintings are inspired by the natural world, particularly the land, sea and sky. These influences often find their way into her work through colour, texture and atmosphere, alongside organic floral forms.
Working intuitively, Joanna begins each painting without a fixed plan, allowing instinct, emotion and movement to guide the process. Using palette knives, brushes and expressive mark making, she builds layers of earthy tones, colour and texture, allowing the painting to develop and evolve naturally.
Although her work is abstract, there is often a sense of place within it — a suggestion of landscape, shifting skies, the movement of the sea or the forms found in nature. Rather than setting out to represent a particular scene, Joanna responds to what she sees and feels, allowing those impressions to emerge through the painting.
For Joanna, the most exciting part of the process is not knowing exactly where a painting will end up. Each work develops through a balance of instinct and control, creating paintings that are atmospheric, tactile and open to interpretation.
